My friend’s new baby smells like sugar. I met him today for the first time and I took a big whiff. Nine days of living smells sweet to me.
When he first came into the room, he was nestled deep in his car seat, bundled securely in layers of footed sleepers and cozy blankets. He looked like a snug steamed pudding, soft and squidgy and warm and ready to be devoured with crème anglaise.
Then my friend unwrapped him like a Christmas present. Oohs and aahs all around. Big bright smiles. Tears. Everyone was transfixed by the little creature’s coos and wiggly limbs. That guy sure knows how to work a room.
New babies are the perfect party trick. Whip one out, and the crowd is instantly pleased. I saw it happen today with my own eyes. Like magic.
Well, I guess the rest of us will have to settle for special cookies to woo guests this holiday. These lemon meringue thumbprints smell like sugar and taste like sunshine. Best of all, they are topped with meringue swirls that you can set ablaze with a torch while your friends watch. A thrilling party trick. No diapers required.
You’ll find the recipe over at the Cooking Channel's website. I participated in their “31 Days of Cookies” project. Hope you like it, and happy holiday baking!
